Andre' Vanne
Sculptor & Woodworker
André was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1949 and spent his formative years working with his photographer father. He developed a love for photography and pursued a career as a photographer and cinematographer. Andre` worked in South Africa and London.
Having developed a keen eye for line and form he turned his hand to wood carving, and founded the internationally famous Feather's studios and galleries. Feather's galleries spread to the Americas, and Europe, taking the unique Andre` style into collections around the globe.
Wanting to express himself more freely, he left the discipline of timber, and turned his hand to bronze.
Andre` migrated to Australia in the year 2000, and settled in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. Here he continues to create bronzes and mixed media sculpture in collaboration with his wife, Catherine. Being an accomplished painter, she sees to the patination of André's bronzes, and the painting of his mixed media pieces as well as the Wozo family.
The WOZOS
The name derives from the French "oiseau", meaning bird and has been suitably Australianised.
They are made individually using timber that would normally be wasted, butt ends, branch wood and other pieces not suitable for furniture manufacture and therein lies their beauty. The fine finish achieved brings to life the magical whorls of grain and depth of fiddle back not usually seen in commercial grade timber.
The heads are sculpted in wax and then hand cast in moulds using reconstituted marble. They are bonded to the bodies and painted in the finest artist's oils to achieve the translucency found only in this medium.
Finally each WOZO is finished with a durable lacquer and signed individually by the artist.
